As last month’s weeding day was called off due to the weather, we are hopeful that the skies are in our favour this weekend and will be weeding in West Cross.

We will be meeting on the corner of Fairwood Road and Sweet Briar Lane.  

If you have weeding tools such as trowels and forks and gardening gloves, please bring them along. If not don’t worry, we will have some available.

Please make sure to wear appropriate clothing and be aware that there will be a moderate amount of walking involved on the day. If you have mobility requirements, please email lydia.graham@mumbles.gov.uk and we will do our best to accommodate you.

 

What will we be doing?

We will be pulling up “weeds” (or wildflowers in inappropriate places) only in areas where they are obstructing the pavement. The aim is to keep our streets tidy and safe to use, without the use of harmful herbicides.

 

Why are we doing this?

This pilot project is aimed at trialling the use of alternative weed control methods, rather than the conventional method of controversial herbicides such as Glyphosate. Mayals and West Cross will be significantly reducing the use of chemical herbicides in an effort to support biodiversity and reduce the harmful impact of spraying.

What we normally see as weeds, are actually incredibly beneficial for pollinators and other wildlife! Spraying these plants with herbicides has been shown to disastrously impact pollinator populations by contaminating their food source, degrading and fragmenting their habitats, and reducing the diversity of plants. We aim to create space for wildlife and the Mumbles community by managing our streets in a slightly different way.

We hope you are as excited as we are to see the evolution of this project! With your help we can achieve the balance of people and nature and create “Bee Friendly Streets” in Mumbles.

Pam ydym ni'n gwneud hyn?

Mae'r prosiect peilot hwn wedi'i anelu at dreialu defnyddio dulliau rheoli chwyn amgen, yn hytrach na'r dull confensiynol o chwynladdwyr dadleuol fel Glyffosad. Bydd Mayals a West Cross yn lleihau'n sylweddol y defnydd o chwynladdwyr cemegol mewn ymdrech i gefnogi bioamrywiaeth a lleihau effaith niweidiol chwistrellu.

Mae’r hyn yr ydym fel arfer yn ei ystyried yn chwyn, mewn gwirionedd yn hynod fuddiol i bryfed peillio a bywyd gwyllt arall! Dangoswyd bod chwistrellu’r planhigion hyn â chwynladdwyr yn effeithio’n drychinebus ar boblogaethau peillwyr trwy halogi eu ffynhonnell bwyd, diraddio a darnio eu cynefinoedd, a lleihau amrywiaeth y planhigion. Ein nod yw creu gofod ar gyfer bywyd gwyllt a chymuned y Mwmbwls trwy reoli ein strydoedd mewn ffordd ychydig yn wahanol.
