A memorial to MARGARET AND JENNIE ACE has been unveiled close to Mumbles pier, near to where the sisters helped save members of the Mumbles lifeboat crew after it struck rocks below the lighthouse on a stormy January morning in 1883.

The lifeboat, called the Wolverhampton, got into trouble after it was launched to help a German ship called the Prinz Prinz Aldabert, after it had struck rocks at Mumbles Head.

They both received gold brooches from the Empress of Germany for looking after the German ship’s crew.
