Welcome to the Mumbles in Bloom contest for 2021! A chance to showcase your front garden at its best. Read below for more information on this years categories and how to take part.

Mumbles Community Council supports environmentally friendly gardening, and will be awarding points across all categories to gardens that take this into account. Please tell us about steps you’ve taken to improve the environmental impact of your garden when you submit your photographs.

Environmentally friendly ideas for your garden include:

  • Using peat-free soils and fertilisers
  • Using alternatives to chemical insecticides or pesticides (such as tea, planting garlic, onions, marigolds or herbs to ward off aphids, pest insects, and stray cats)
  • Incorporating a pond and/or bird bath to your garden.
  • Collecting rain water for watering your plants
  • Planting native flowers for pollinators.

Categories for the 2021 competition:

Best Front Garden:

Our best front garden category is an excellent opportunity to show us what you’ve been growing this year. Judging for this category will consider a number of factors including: colour, use of space, variety, and environmental impact. Please submit up to 2 photographs of your front garden to enter the Best Front Garden category.

Best Back Garden

For the first time this year, we are running a back garden contest too, and we can’t wait to see what great spaces everyone has created. Judging for this category will consider colour, use of space, variety, and environmental impact, alongside other factors. Please submit up to 2 photographs of your back garden to enter the Best Back Garden category.

Best Business in Bloom:

Local businesses are invited to share their plant displays, hanging flowers or gardens for our Best Business in Bloom category. Judging for this category will consider colour, variety, and environmental impact, alongside other factors. Please submit up to 2 photographs of your business to enter the Best Business in Bloom category.

Most Biodiverse Garden:

To celebrate the many environmental benefits of gardens in the Mumbles, this year we are introducing the Most Biodiverse Garden category. Biodiversity means the variety of plants and animals found within a space. For this category we will be judging biodiversity based on the total number of UK native plants and animals that are present in the gardens. To enter the Most Biodiverse Garden category, please submit up to 6 photographs of your garden to us, showing the different plants and animals you’ve seen in your garden this summer. If possible, please also send in a list of the species shown in the photographs, however this isn’t a requirement to enter the category.

Best Repurposed Garden Display:

Another new category this year, we are looking for everyone’s most creative and innovative ideas for repurposing items to use within their garden. Landfill waste causes huge problems, and so Mumbles Community Council supports residents to reduce, reuse and recycle items as frequently as possible. This years challenge is to use objects that would otherwise be thrown away, and repurpose them as useful additions to your garden. From reusing containers, wellies and pallets as planters, to using egg boxes for seedling pots, to making rainwater collectors out of plastic bottles, we’d love to see your Repurposed Garden Displays. To enter this category please submit up to 4 photos of your garden that show your repurposed objects. Please also provide a small description of how you are using the repurposed objects.

For more suggestions on how to repurpose household waste into useful gardening solutions, please see our posts on facebook @Mumbles Community Council Environmental, and on our website at Mumbles.co.uk.
