On Thursday 9th October at Newton Village Hall, John Powell gave an excellent lecture on GIs in Gower. There were many people with stories to tell about war brides, chewing gum, nylons and spam. There were a number of surprises too. A “genuine” GI whose name was possibly Glenn Miller, turned up to bring candies and gum while looking for Fairwood Airport. Later 91 year old Cliff Guard who was from Swansea, joined the American army and landed in Normandy just after DDay told us of his experiences to appreciative applause.
This was just part of MCC s Older Persons’ Festival. We are looking forward to the social and quiz on 24th October, at WX Community Centre, featuring Swansea Accordion Orchestra
