Mumbles Community Council have paid £9,000 for five pieces of gym equipment to be installed along the seafront, with plans to add more should the project prove successful.
Outdoor gyms – or adult playgrounds – have been growing in popularity in the UK in recent following the lead of the Chinese government which has installed outdoor gym equipment in many of its parks.
“Cost and accessibility are the two main barriers for people wanting to exercise,” says Tracey Duffy, Chairman of the Council’s Development Committee. “Outdoor Gyms removes these barriers and that’s why we decided to install some for residents and visitors to use.”
Research shows that 26% of those who were using the outdoor gyms had never exercised before, with them being particularly popular with elderly users, although most have users of all ages.
