LANGLAND BRASSERIE EXTENSION

MUMBLES Community Council has objected to Langland Brasserie’s expansion plans.

The owner of the seaside restaurant wants to build three decking areas on a grassy section opposite — just across the coastal path — for up to 70 diners, as previously reported in the Post.

The community council’s planning committee chairman, Brian Arthur, told councillors at a meeting on Tuesday that there had been a great deal of discussion by committee members about the brasserie plans.

Mr Arthur said he understood the business wanted to expand, and that meant jobs.

But he raised concerns about the decking area being across the footpath and the fact the scheme was within the Gower AONB (area of outstanding natural beauty).

In the end, fellow councillors voted in favour of the committee’s objection recommendation, which was on AONB visual impact grounds and concerns about hot drinks and alcohol having to be carried across the path.

Before they voted, Terry Scales suggested it was not abnormal for restaurant staff and customers to take food and drink across paths or squares, and wanted to know if the proposal would improve the seafront area.

John Cooper said: “It is nice to see someone trying to expand, but that is not the right place for it. It is inside the AONB, and the footpath is going to be terribly narrow. It is the place where everybody congregates.”

He wondered if the brasserie could negotiate with Swansea Council to expand by using huts to the left of the premises as you look up from the beach.

The application by David Johns, of Parklime Properties Ltd, will be determined at a later date by Swansea Council.

Mr Johns said the decking areas would, if built, enable the restaurant to expand its full-time workforce from 26 to 38, on top of the existing 14 part-time employees.

The plans do not indicate any increase in the 120 parking spaces currently there.
