Chair’s Report September 2018

I would like to start by welcoming our new councillor Dr Martin O’Neill who has been co-opted onto the council to represent West Cross ward. He has a wealth of experience and expertise that will be of real value to the council and our residents.

August has been a quiet month with the summer holidays meaning that meetings were not generally held.

I attended the Swansea City of Sanctuary Refugees welcome to Mumbles Day and myself and the High Sheriff of West Glamorgan welcomed the visitors to Mumbles and joined them again for tea at the end of the day when we enjoyed a rousing chorus of Sospan Bach from the singing group.

It was wonderful to see so many of our local businesses generously donating food and our local churches, including Tabernacle Church, All Saints and Our Lady Star of the Sea putting on activities for the visitors.

On August 15th I attended the briefing by the Welsh Government Independent Review Panel on the results of the Review of the Future of the Community and Town Council Sector in Wales. Please see attached Report.

Mumbles Classic Car Show

On August 30th I was invited, along with The Lord Mayor of Swansea and the High Sheriff of West Glamorgan to judge the Classic Car Show at the Newton Road closure event. I would request council’s retrospective approval to attend this event on behalf of MCC.

The annual Mumboules Competition took place on Saturday September 1st with MCC entering a team including Councillors Martin O’Neill, Carwyn Thomas, Rob Marshall and myself with guest players Tonia Antoniazzi and her friend Eleanor Bozkurt. Having ‘mislaid’ Carwyn after the first round, Mumbles Rangers very kindly loaned us Carol Podbielski who was an admirable substitute. We reached the quarter-finals where we lost 2-1 to The Pilot in a closely fought contest. To date our team have raised £205 in sponsorship which will be divided between the Lord Mayor’s Charity Fund (Maggie’s Cancer Centre Swansea, West Glamorgan Youth Theatre Swansea, Eastside Foodbank and YMCA Young Carers Service), Ysgol Crug Glas and Tenovus.

Thank you
